The
University of Utah
is located in
Salt Lake City,
situated at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains.
Salt Lake City is the hub of a large metropolitan area,
with a population of approximately a million people.
Utah
itself is a diverse state with, among other things, one of the highest
concentrations of computer hardware and software industries in the
country.
Excellent cultural facilities are available in the
city
and through out the
rest of
the state,
including the
Utah Symphony,
Ballet West,
and a large number of
theater companies.
The Sundance Film Festival
takes place annually in
Park City,
a half hour's drive from campus.
Student hangouts
include many affordable
eating and drinking
establishments. Many
brew pubs
are located in the area, plus a
combined pub and movie theater.
The canyon country of southern Utah is unique.
The state resources includes
five
National Parks and the largest continguous areas of wilderness
in the U.S. outside of Alaska.
National Forests and
Wilderness Areas,
and other
public
lands are scattered throughout the state.
The state of Utah has unsurpassed opportunities for
outdoor recreation,
many only a few minutes drive away from the University.
It has some of the best
skiing and snowbording
anywhere, along with excellent
biking,
camping,
and mountain and desert
hiking.
