The University of Utah is located in Salt Lake City, situated at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains. Salt Lake City is the hub of a large metropolitan area, with a population of approximately a million people. Utah itself is a diverse state with, among other things, one of the highest concentrations of computer hardware and software industries in the country.

Excellent cultural facilities are available in the city and through out the rest of the state, including the Utah Symphony, Ballet West, and a large number of theater companies. The Sundance Film Festival takes place annually in Park City, a half hour's drive from campus.

Student hangouts include many affordable eating and drinking establishments. Many brew pubs are located in the area, plus a combined pub and movie theater.

The canyon country of southern Utah is unique. The state resources includes five National Parks and the largest continguous areas of wilderness in the U.S. outside of Alaska. National Forests and Wilderness Areas, and other public lands are scattered throughout the state.

The state of Utah has unsurpassed opportunities for outdoor recreation, many only a few minutes drive away from the University. It has some of the best skiing and snowbording anywhere, along with excellent biking, camping, and mountain and desert hiking. In fact, there is more than we can list here.
