Wasatch Citizens Series
The Wasatch Citizens Series (WCS) consists of five events held each year at
the major cross country ski areas along the Wasatch Front and Back. Two
classical technique and three free technique races are included to provide
the balance local athletes need to prepare for national and international
competition. In addition to our seventeen age categories for each gender,
the WCS includes novice classes, to encourage beginners to get involved in
the sport, and expert classes, for more serious racers. Awards are given
to the top three finishers in each of these groups at each race. Points are awarded to all race finishers, and the top
three skiers in each age group receive special prizes at the end of the
season. Participants' ages range from 5 to 70+, and many families
regularly attend the races.
The WCS ski races have been Utah's premier nordic skiing events since 1979. When the US Ski Team moved its coaching staff to Park City in the 1980's, the WCS became a training ground for many of the country's top skiers. The Park City Junior Nordic Ski Team has launched several young athletes to national recognition, and some of our older participants have consistently won National Masters titles. Members of the last three U.S. Olympic Teams, Laura McCabe and Wendy Wagner, began their skiing careers in our races.
Principal sponsor for the 2007/2008 WCS is Timberland. Various local retailers act as individual event sponsors: Wild Rose, White Pine, Kirkham's, REI, and Wasatch Touring.
ClifBar will provide energy bars, gel, and drink for all of our participants at each race. Also, lunch will be provided at the first race (Soldier Hollow), the fourth (Soldier Hollow), and the last (White Pine Farm), compliments of: Kipp & Christian Law Office, MidValley Animal Clinic, Nate Wade Subaru, and Scott Machinery Company.
A number of companies provide products that are given out after the races by random drawing. 11/13/07 - Added the Equinox Ski Challenge, a 24-hour race on Mar 22-23 at West Yellowstone, as well as dates for the other March races.
10/30/07 - Added the Moose Chase date (Feb 9), plus the Ski Up 2008 event on April 19. The latter is a cross country ski race UP the Snowbird Ski Area!
09/03/07 - First draft. The local Utah race schedule looks pretty solid through February, but be sure to check again later in the fall to get dates for the March events.
