When Animals Attack Game Rules
Introduction
The Story: In a remote island in the South Pacific human scientists have been performing experiments on animals from around the world. In their central research lab they have been running neurological experiments on monkeys to try to stimulate primate brain capacity. As time passed, they found themselves unlocking powerful capabilities in these creatures that may someday be useful to man. The monkeys became so intelligent that they soon became as co-equals to their human captors, living harmoniously with each other. However, when one day their experiments unlocked in the monkeys the long dormant evil gene . . . things were about to change. As the game begins each player begins with a superintelligent monkey that has escaped from the central human research facility with one purpose in mind – create an army of animals to destroy the humans at all cost.
The object of the game: To build up an animal army and control the most tiles on the island when all the humans are destroyed. The game ends when all human settlements have been destroyed. At that point, the player controlling more tiles wins.
Gameplay
A game is broken up into individual turns. Each turn has three phases:
Phase 1) Bioengineering animals
In this phase you may select an animal from those available to you to begin creating. For more on bioengineering animals, see Creating Animals.
Phase 2) Moving and Attacking
In this phase you may move any one of your animals on the board. Only one animal may be moved per turn. For more on movement see Moving Animals. If you move an animal to a tile occupied by an opponent's animal, an attack is carried out. See Attacking
Phase 3) Place completed animals
In this phase an animal you have completed creating may be placed on the board in any tile you own that corresponds to that animal's natural terrain. See Animal placement.
Each player takes a turn until the game has ended.
Creating Animals
You begin the game with a single monkey. However as the game progresses and you occupy more game tiles, other animals become available for creation. Each animal has a natural terrain type associated with it and a certain number of those terrain tiles that must be occupied before it becomes available. To gain access to more powerful animals, you must control a higher percentage of that animal's native terrain type. Additionally, each animal takes a specific number of turns to build. See Appendix A for a complete list of default animals and their terrain types and requirements. These default values can actually be customized using the config.ini file. For more on this, see the readme.txt file.
Building more than one animal at a time:
Initially, you are only allowed to build one animal at a time. However, for each human settlement you take over, you are allowed to build an extra animal at a time. See Attacking Human Settlements for more information on how these are captured.
Population limit:
The size of your animal army is limited by the number of water tiles that you own. Initially you can have up to three animals on the board. For each water tile you own you are allowed an additional two animals. So for example, if you own 3 water tiles you can have up to 9 animals.
Moving Animals
Each animal has a move rating that determines how many spaces it can move in a turn. Additionally some animals may only move on certain types of terrain. (For example, a monkey cannot enter a water tile) If you move an animal in an unowned tile or an unguarded enemy tile you gain control of that tile. Controlling tiles not only gives you more points toward winning the game, but also makes new animals available. See Appendix A for a list of requirements for each animal. If you move an animal into a tile occupied by an opponent's animal an attack is carried out.
Attacking
When opposing animals meet in a tile, they attack! (Hence the name, When Animals Attack ) Each animal has an attack rating and a health rating. When an attack occurs, each animal subtracts the other's attack rating from it's health rating. If an animal's health reaches zero it dies and is removed from the board. A battle can have three possible results:
One animal dies and the other survives. The surviving animal then remains on the tile and that player takes control of it.
Both animals die. Both are removed and the ownership of the tile is not changed.
Neither animal dies. The attacking animal returns to the tile it attacked from and the defending animal remains in the contested tile.
Attacking human settlements:
If you move an animal into a human settlement tile then that animal attacks the humans in that tile. A human settlement has health rating of 5. When it's health reaches zero, it is conquered and any animal can take control of it. Controlling human settlements allows you to build more animals at a time.
Animal Placement
At the end of your turn if you have completed creating an animal you may place it on any square you own that corresponds to that animal's native terrain type. If there are no empty tiles to place your animal, you must wait to place it. See Appendix A for more information on terrain types.
Ending the Game
The game ends when all human settlements have been destroyed.
Winning the Game
The player who controls the most tiles when the game ends is the winner.
